President's Message: Top interior design trends to watch in 2023

Recently architects and interior designers were surveyed on design trends for 2023. With the new year upon us, many are looking for ways to improve their lives and their spaces. For years, home decor has aired on the side of minimalism where open shelving, white backsplashes, and gray flooring was the trend. In 2023, we see comfort and functionality take precedence as homeowners look for cost effective solutions for their growing home needs.

As more people work remotely or engage in hybrid-work, functional office space becomes a necessity. No longer are people just making due with the kitchen table or corner desk but designating entire spaces for work. Many homeowners are converting existing space or additions to accommodate their work from home needs.

With the rising cost of natural gas and increase in regulation around fossil fuels, many homeowners are seeking alternative energy sources to meet the utility needs of their homes. More real estate sites list eco-friendly design and amenities as high priority for homeowners. Solar panels, energy efficient windows, tech-based thermostats, and even environmentally friendly toilets are trending in 2023. Additionally the inclusion of EV charging stations are on the rise as many people switch to electric vehicles. Bloomberg predicts that by 2030 nearly half of vehicles will be electrically powered.

Gone are the days of stark, minimalist spaces. Homeowners are swapping out white and gray finishings for earthtones. Eclectic and curated spaces with greenery and organic furnishings are a post-pandemic trend that will transition into 2023 and beyond.

For years marble and quartz have been the preferred stone for kitchens and bathrooms. New technological advancements have led to the creation of “sintered” stones, a combination of minerals that can’t be etched, scratched, burned, or stained. Dekton and Neolith are two common sintered stones that resemble high-end surfaces but have unprecedented durability.

In an effort to compete with increased interest rates and a transitioning real estate market many builders are keeping affordability top of mind. Builders are marketing predesigned packages of cabinets, countertops, appliances and flooring to decrease costs. In 2023 we are excited to see how affordability and quality design can coexist.
